John Hayes was one of the most unique cinematic voices to emerge from the underground film scene in the 1960s and 70s. A failed playwright, Hayes' films were bleak, sexually charged morality tales that combined the troubled souls of Tennessee Williams with the exploitation styling's of Lee Frost and company.

SWEET TRASH (1970):
In Sweet Trash, an alcoholic longshoreman, deep in debt to the mob, is forced into an increasingly debauched nightmare as he tries to avoid the thugs out to get him. Along the way, he meets local oddballs, violent criminals, and lusty women. With a mysterious computer controlling everyone's actions this grimy artistic film with almost science fiction-esque fear of future mind control was made well before it's time.

THE HANG UP (1970):
The Hang Up follows the forbidden affair between a tempted LAPD vice cop and a beautiful, but mysterious, young prostitute. Set against a world of pimps, pushers and sexual deviates, The Hang Up is a powerful indictment of law-enforcement hypocrisy. With a wonderful mix of love ins and sleazy betrayal The Hang Up is a creative commentary on the sexual revolution and human nature.

Essential Drive in Collection movies

"Somehow managed to snag a copy of this long out of print double bill during the Black Friday sale. The disclaimer said it may have imperfections on the case, but that was not the case at all. Movies are enjoyable enough, but the women are absolutely beautiful. It's a joy to see the fleshy, round, blondes and redheads (what some may now call thicc) that used to populate adult movies in all (or most of) their glory."

Classic drive in sleaze

"These moves are nonsense (positive). A lot of fun to throw on at a party for background ambiance."

Lower tier exploitation films from

"Lower tier exploitation films from 1970. Not really to my taste, but the restorations are still up to VS's usual high standards."

Sweet, sweet trash!

"The title ain't lying! These are great sexploitation features."

Kyle G. (5/5)

sexploitation double feature

"Street Trash works surprisingly well if a little trippy at the end. The Hang Up is dark tale well made"

Two Gritty Dramas With a Heavy Helping of Sleaze

"This double feature rewards with some fine hard-boiled acting interspersed between lots of nekkid ladies. In Sweet Trash, an alcoholic longshoreman runs heavily into debt to some gangsters. The lead actor is pretty fantastic — he feels real, both sympathetic and no-nonsense. The same goes for the male lead of The Hang Up. A vice cop who succumbs to the allure of a pretty young thing, you feel the vulnerability under his gruff exterior. So both are recommended — come for the beautiful nude ladies, but stay for the compelling acting."

Sweet Trash / The Hang Up

"Nice double feature from 1970. Good Cinematography too."

Good Things Come In Pairs

"They do. Like Drive In Collection double-feature DVD's. Quite a few nice pairs on display in these two drive in flicks. And mostly real, though there is a dancer with far too obvious implants that stand out like a sore thumb in films from this era. Neither movie is particularly great, but they're short enough and the story is jsut barely engaging enough that you aren't bored between doses of eye candy. The delightfully sexy Sharon Matt being my favorite of the ladies here. At least the ones where there names are known."

Trashy sweets!

"Vinegar Syndrome's release of "Sweet Trash" brings order to the chaotic charm of this cult classic tale, presenting a visually enhanced edition that preserves the film's distinctive features. The restoration work elevates the visual appeal of the film, allowing audiences to appreciate the eclectic elements that Bill Milling brings to the table in this exploitation gem. With this release, Vinegar Syndrome once again proves its dedication to preserving and presenting cult cinema with a touch of nostalgic and eclectic allure."
