Jack (Beerbohm Tree) is a wealthy society man with a perverse secret: in the basement of his stately London home, he has constructed an elaborate series of contraptions which he uses to bind and have his way with unsuspecting young women. However, his first conquest, Alice, discovers that she enjoys her ‘torments’ and soon becomes Jack's willing accomplice in luring other ladies into his house of forbidden pleasures...

Adapted from the famed and anonymously authored Victorian novella “The Way of a Man With a Maid,” THE NAUGHTY VICTORIANS was the filmmaking debut of acclaimed theatre director, Robert Sickinger. Featuring elaborate production design and glossy cinematography by Joe Mangine (Squirm, Mother’s Day) along with a cast including Sarah Nicholson (A Woman’s Torment), Susan Sloan (The Passions of Carol), and Angel Barrett (Alice in Wonderland), Vinegar Syndrome presents this bawdy erotic comedy on Blu-ray, newly restored from its 35mm negative.

Reviews

Historically Important

"Movie: The costumes are fun enough, and I really like the main set in which most of the movie takes place. However, _none_ of the sex is consensual, which makes it generally unpleasant to watch. The ending somewhat redeems the movie, but not enough IMO. Interesting to view through a historical lens, since it's a 1970's adaptation of a novel published around 1908. This would technically make it _Edwardian_, but perhaps the events _in_ the novel take place in the Victorian era proper, and in any case "The Naughty Edwardians" doesn't have the same ring. Extras: Trailers are always nice, and I especially enjoyed the soft trailer that featured lots of man-on-the-street interviews with people who just saw the movie Packaging: Looks nice enough, and bonus points for reversible cover."

Classic Movie

"Classic erotic film gets the "classic" restoration treatment from VS. I had never seen this one, and was super pumped to pick it up during a sale. Glad I did, because this was a fun watch"

All Tied Up and Nowhere to Go

"Fairly faithful adaptation of Victoria erotic classic 'A Man with a Maid' though the altered ending completely and u sensibly trans figures the character Alice from an excited libertine into a revenge seeker. The repetitious nature of Victoria neurotic is uncharitably exposed when translated to film and later sequences retain the same squeamish nature they assert in the novel."

Off The Beaten Adult Film Path...pun semi-intended

"This is not your garden variety adult film. As evidenced from the R-rated trailer, this played some mainstream movie houses, at least in NYC. It's not difficult to see why. According to the commentary, the movie only cost $10,000, which makes sense in one respect as 95% of the movie takes place on one set, but what a set. Plush surroundings, the various contraptions and the costuming of the women definitely gives it a different feel and mood. Based on Victorian erotica, specifically "A Man With A Maid," this tale of Jack and his initiation of four women into his bondage lair benefits from two well cast leads and a game supporting cast. Susan Sloan is especially good, reminding me of a 70's version of Elisabeth Moss."
