Billy and Gilly host New York’s most provocative and successful morning talk show. But their lascivious on-the-air personas are masking a far less than voracious home-sex life. Everything comes to a head when Gilly discovers that her seemingly faithful husband is carrying on with his “Love Bunny” Phyllis. At first hurt be his infidelity, Gilly quickly decides that she too ought too expand her sexual horizons and, with that in mind, begins an over-the-top game of seduction as she beds each of her and Billy’s high society friends.

Erotic auteur Radley Metzger (Therese & Isabelle’s) second feature directed under the pseudonym “Henry Paris,” NAKED CAME THE STRANGER was itself adapted from the best selling novel of the same name, which was secretly penned by the staff of Newsday. With a cast of 70s hardcore greats, led by Darby Lloyd Rains (The Virgin & the Lover), Mary Stuart (The Passions of Carol), Levi Richards (The Intrusion), Alan Marlow (That Lady From Rio), Helen Madigan (Confessions of a Teenage Peanut Butter Freak), and Gerald Grant (Both Ways), this elegant and sophisticated comedy embodies the mid 70s “couples film” and at last comes to 4K UHD from Mélusine, newly restored from its 35mm negative, and presented in both its commonly seen hardcore version as well as its extremely rare alternate softcore cut, which includes numerous additional and extended dialogue sequences.

Measured recomendation

"Radley Metzer's "sophisticated erotica" reputation came from earlier and better imo films than this one, but that doesn't mean this one is bad by any means. The story of the literary hoax novel is maybe more interesting than this movie itself. I liked the booklet that came with this lavish looking package as I wasn't aware of the whole origin of the novel, the supposed writer "Penelope Ashe" and how it came to be. In the movie, I enjoyed seeing Helen Madigan and Rita Davis. The best sequence was the Darby Lloyd Rains seduction of Mary Stuart. I give the movie itself only a 6/10, but this overall package with the booklet and Radley commentary makes it a 4 star release."

Naked Came the Stranger

"The Melusine presentation is always and elaborate and a welcome edition. The way these are restored and put on a pedestal is just amazing. I do wish they’d switch the clear cases for the discs to be able to see the articles and ads on the reverse cover. Booklet is always welcome."

Another classic from the master

"Another classic from the master of porn Radley Metzger. The artwork for this one really caught my eye. Kinda looks like some lost Italian giallo or something. Darby Lloyd Rains is fantastic in the lead, and super attractive when doing the more dirty scenes. Great transfer and we get it all in 4k. It's great we get a whole bunch of extras including an audio commentary with Mr. Metzger himself. Great release."

Great restoration

"Metzger has been an interest of mine for a while and I'm so glad VS and Melusine started this reissue series. The movies look great, weirder than you think."

Far better than I remembered

"One of Metzger's films that I was previously a bit luke warm on, but after revisiting it via this gorgeous Mélusine release it may have become one of my favourites. Possibly due to it being based on a novel published around a decade earlier, it exudes a classiness in conjunction with it's porno chic, as well as having a far more in depth plot and well realised characters than was common in the genre. Bizarrely, I discovered the dvd release of this while doing a house clearance the day after I ordered the 4k! Needless to say, I waited for the Mélusine before I watched it!"

Mélusine is the classiest porno label of all time!

"I viewed this film on the Naked Came the Stranger Mélusine 4K Limited Edition physical media released through Vinegar Syndrome’s sister-website Mélusine and it is the same great premium level of packaging and presentation that you’ve come to expect from the generic releases of this boutique label. No other brand beats Vinegar Syndrome at the cardboard game and this great slipcover is no exception to the consistently fantastic artwork and component quality this company produces. For my full detailed review of Naked Came the Stranger, see my entry on Letterboxd: @M4N14K"

great

"Gillian and William host a popular talk show during breakfast time on a New York radio station, where they are a perfect couple. Gillian accidentally discovered that her husband was having an affair, so she retaliated against him in kind by finding different men as sexual partners. This film has two versions: edited and uncut. The uncut version is rated X-level in the United States."

Excellent release of a porno

"Excellent release of a porno chic classic, the Mélusine edition of Radley Metzger's Naked Came The Stranger will be a welcome addition to anyone's Golden Age of Adult collection. Extras include contributions by the Rialto Report's Ashley West, an assortment of advertising materials and an alternate soft core cut of the film. My only complaint is that apparently all the deluxe Mélusine slipcase /slipcover sets have magnets somewhere in them that do. . . something? - but all five I own seem to do nothing magnetic! :-) Can't say it actually bothers me, this is a great release. I am hoping at some point Melusine can publish an edition of the source novel by the pseudonymous Penelope Ashe."

Not So Naked Inside! Fully Loaded

"This is Just So Beautifully Presented, Its Just Wonderful, The Box is Premium and the artwork is stuning, Lots of extras with a booklet inside with the bluray and 4K. Love these and hope they release more in that packaging soon."

Erotic Drama

"Naked Came the Stranger (1975) is an unusual artifact of 1970s independent cinema: an erotic drama adapted from a famous literary hoax and reshaped by director Radley Metzger into something more stylish, ironic, and character‑driven. The film follows Gillian Blake, a radio host who discovers her husband’s infidelity and responds by embarking on a series of encounters meant to test the boundaries of desire, autonomy, and marital honesty. While the premise is provocative, the film approaches it with a tone closer to social satire than pure exploitation, using Gillian’s journey to comment on the emotional disconnection beneath the era’s sexual liberation."
