Two classic sex comedies from Québec’s “Maple Syrup Porno” movement.

TWO WOMEN IN GOLD (DEUX FEMMES EN OR) – Feeling neglected by their husbands, bored housewives Fernande (Naked Lunch’s Monique Mercure) and Violette (Panic’s Louise Turcot) embrace a new spirit of liberated promiscuity, delighting in casual sex with the men in their suburban neighbourhood. After establishing himself as a director of documentary shorts, Claude Fournier graduated to feature filmmaking with this explicit sex comedy written in collaboration with his wife Marie-José Raymond. More than simply confirming the commercial viability of the “Maple Syrup Porno” movement, Two Women in Gold went on to become one of the biggest box office successes in the history of Québec, inspiring countless imitators and a 2025 remake.

THE APPLE, THE STEM AND THE SEEDS! (LA POMME, LA QUEUE ET LES PEPINS) – Riding high on the sexual vitality of their blossoming romance, Martial (Gina’s Donald Lautrec) and Louise (The Red Kitchen’s Han Masson) are thrown a curveball when Martial emerges from their wedding day with a crippling case of impotence. As Louise grows frustrated with her new state of celibacy, friends, family, and scientists join forces to help Martial recapture his virility. Four years after Two Women in Gold, Fournier and Raymond partnered with the “Maple Syrup Porno” pioneers at Cinépix to deliver an exercise in heightened bad taste and bawdy screwball absurdity that remains their most outrageous effort.

Both are great examples of Claude Fournier and Marie-José Raymond embracing the anything-goes spirit of early ’70s Québec cinema. The restorations look terrific, and the extras are loaded with context, from filmmaker interviews and fresh commentaries to trailers, posters, an essay and Rick Trembles’ comics."
