Amusing double bill from the pervy Peruvian

"The big CT may not have been able to (or want to) make the XXX equivalent of all those posh Merchant-Ivory efforts, but he was able to put together some funny, disposable efforts. This double bill features some lovely cast (Blair Harris, Colleen Brennan, Connie Peterson) and not so lovely cast (please don't take your clothes off Fernando!). Worth picking up if there are still copies in stock."

Tobalina rules

"You either love Tobalina or hate em. I'd say if you're in the latter camp, you're missing out! Meet him on his wavelength and a sort of hypnosis begins to occur once you've seen a lot of his films. Just give yourself over and transcend, friends."

Under Some Kind of Spell

"The charms of Carlos Tobalina require a certain connoisseurship. At first glance, his films are just short of totally inept: the acting is wooden, the dialog is mind-numbing, and the lighting is so flat and unnatural that the cumulative effect is something like Brechtian alienation. But the lack of finesse opens his films up to all sorts of contingent wonders that could never be anticipated. Take the opening of Come Under My Spell: the hero is introduced with a wide shot of the Berkeley campus that zooms in so slowly and haltingly that it feels like a structural experiment by Michael Snow. The camera then follows his gaze toward the backside of blonde co-ed, a professional plant who must be so stunningly beautiful that a random passing child spontaneously stops to wave at her. Our hero then passes under the school's iconic bronze gate, but the camera attracts the attention of golden retriever, who then becomes the star of the shot! These peripheral details, intrusions of real life into otherwise stultified narratives, make Tobalina's films worth watching in spite of themselves."
