BEWARE THE KISS OF THE DEVIL! Maverick exploitation film director Jess Franco and Swiss producer Erwin C. Dietrich's notorious "nunsploitation" classic LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN comes to Blu-ray for the very first time in North America, totally uncut and remastered in HD from the original camera negative! 16-year-old Maria (the lovely Susan Hemingway) is taken by force into the dreaded Serra D'Aires convent, a sect secretly run by diabolical Satanists. Her confessor is in collusion with the Mother Superior (Ana Zanatti) and the not so pious pair almost immediately subject Maria to unspeakable tortures, forcing her into sex with men, women, and even the Devil himself. Gaslit into believing this supernatural debauchery is all a dream, she writes a letter to God begging for salvation, but the powers that be have other hideous plans in store for her...

Shocking, salacious and also stunningly shot and expertly performed by an international cast, LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN is among the best blasphemous European horror films of the 1970s and a high mark in Franco and Dietrich's respective oeuvres.

Reviews

The devil made me do it!

"Excellent slipcover and a nicely done transfer to Blu Ray disc. Color and picture is very good for a 1977 film. A young girl is sent to a covent and torture for her sins. This film is not a hardcore from Jess Franco. Some frontal nudity and that's it. And plus a few gory torture scenes. A Jess Franco fan, Joe NY."

— Joseph V. (5/5)

Yuck.

"Listen I was aware of the lead actress in this and her age while filming. And I was at least open to the idea of it being handled tastefully. But it isn't. She's in a variety of bad positions and it just left me feeling gross about the whole thing."

— Tristan H. (1/5)

One of the Better Francos

"I'm 82 movies into my Jess Franco project and I'd rank this in the top third of what I've seen. Good production values. Plenty of sleaze. Great slipcover. Glad to replace my DVD with this quality edition of a quality Franco film."

— Jason N. (4/5)

A little to exploitive for me

"Great nunploitation, but I don’t personally like the idea of using a younger girl like that in these movies. This is the freaks, but not the cool kind."

— Taylor S. (4/5)

Jess Franco nunsplo

"Uncle Jess always delivers the goods."

— Daniel R. (5/5)

Amazing

"Honestly a great little erotic horror movie. Ending is abrupt, but doesn't take away."

— Jon R. (5/5)

Yowzers

"Well you know what you are getting into with this cover. I mostly enjoyed this but overall not my bag."

— Roger S. (4/5)

Great Film, but Flawed Release.

"I adore this era of Franco. So much to enjoy, and this is one of the era's best. Great transfer here, with a gorgeous slip from the always talented Suspiria Vilchez. Not a whole lot in the way of extras, but the commentary from Troy Howarth is decent, even while it points out one of the huge flaws in this release (and the Delirium line in general). That flaw is the the lack of any other language tracks. It's bad enough that there are none in the previous releases, but this one was originally advertised as having a Spanish track. That was just quietly removed from the site when it's absence was pointed out. As Howarth notes in his commentary, the English dub for this one is particularly dire. It really is the lack of alternate language options that is preventing these Delirium releases from being the definitive Blu Ray editions of these Franco Classics."

— TJ W. (4/5)

Greatest of all nunsploitation.

"I love this movie in all its craziness. so happy to see it with such good presentation. P. s My wife also enjoyed! P. s. s uncle jess has the greatest take on the devil!"

— Brendan L. (5/5)

Too Hot For Australia!

"Pretty funny (not really, pretty ridiculous actually) that this movie was "denied classification", in essence making it illegal for sale in Australia. It's really pretty tame when you think of all the kinds of extreme cinema out there. This Jess Franco movie is shot in a more conventional style that a lot of the ones he's known for. Good story, and great for any fans of the nun-sploitation genre. Beautiful artwork, love the original cover and the new slipcover images."
